Why this job exists

A generation of developers is retiring. The systems aren't.

Thousands of businesses run their daily operations — orders, inventory, patient records, payroll — on MultiValue systems that were built decades ago and have been extended ever since. They work. They are not being replaced. But the developers who understand them are retiring faster than new ones are being trained.

The result is a market where companies pay well above the going rate for people who can maintain, extend, and modernize these systems — and still struggle to find them. That is the gap this Academy trains you to fill.

Roy Contreras, president of ACE Tech Resources, has spent 35 years placing MultiValue developers with companies across North America. He built this program because he watched the same conversation repeat: a company that cannot function without its system, and no one left who knows how it works.

Where MultiValue runs
  • 01Distribution & wholesale — order management, inventory, dispatch for regional and national distributors
  • 02Healthcare — patient records, pharmacy, lab and billing systems
  • 03Retail — point-of-sale back ends, merchandising, supply chain
  • 04Government & education — permits, registration, student information systems
  • 05Financial services — credit unions, insurance, loan servicing
The program

Four credentials. One year. A portfolio employers can open.

Each credential is a professional certification earned by presenting a milestone project to a panel that includes an employer partner. You leave each level able to do something a company will pay for.

How a week works

Every week follows the same shape, and every week you ship something.

The program is delivered online through the ACE Tech learning platform, with live sessions, a cohort community, and an assigned industry mentor. You'll need about [N] hours a week.

Business scenario

The week opens with a real workplace situation — the problem a developer on the job would actually be handed.

Guided demonstration

Your instructor builds the week's skill live on a real UniVerse account, narrating what each part means to the business.

Hands-on lab

You do it yourself, on the Wychbooks Bookstore — a realistic wholesale distribution database with customers, titles, orders, and suppliers.

Assignment & assessment

Independent work that produces evidence, and a short competency check against the week's objectives.

Mentor coaching

A practicing MultiValue developer meets with your cohort every week. You'll bring them a question straight from the chapter.

Portfolio artifact

Every week adds one piece to your professional portfolio — 52 pieces by graduation, the thing employers actually open.

What you'll have built

Not exercises. A body of work.

  1. Week 1Your first command on a live enterprise system — and a written brief on what happens to a business when its core system goes down.
  2. Week 7Programs that read and write real data using the read-modify-write pattern every Pick BASIC application is built on.
  3. Week 13Foundations milestone — you model a new business domain from a brief, build the files and dictionaries, and deliver formatted reports with a design document and handover note.
  4. Week 26Developer milestone — a multi-program application: menu, data-entry screen, reports, supporting subroutines, code standards, and a full test plan, demonstrated live.
  5. Week 33A complete Uniface application connected to live UniVerse data — the modern front end over the enterprise back end.
  6. Week 39Integrator milestone — an integrated application spanning Uniface, Pick BASIC, and UniVerse with indexes, transactions, and batch processing.
  7. Week 41REST endpoints built with Rocket MVIS, exposing your business logic to the web.
  8. Weeks 46–49Four weeks inside an employer partner's production system, supervised, with a documented apprenticeship portfolio.
  9. Week 52Capstone at Demo Day — an original full-stack business application presented to a panel of instructors, employer partners, and Rocket Software community members.
Placement

You're not just enrolling in a school. You're entering a recruiter's candidate pool.

ACE Tech Resources is a specialist recruiting firm — this is what we do. From the day you earn your Foundations credential, you're in our candidate pool with a portfolio and a milestone score attached. Our employer partners host apprentices, sit on the milestone panels, and hire graduates.

"It is not raw intelligence or prior programming experience. It is understanding the business context, respecting the architecture that has kept these systems running for decades, and having the professional discipline to change things carefully."

Roy Contreras, President, ACE Tech Resources — on what separates developers who thrive in MultiValue from those who don't
  1. Week 13Candidate profile opened. Your Foundations credential and portfolio go to the ACE Tech recruiting desk.
  2. Week 26Placement-ready. With the Developer credential, you can be submitted to open roles.
  3. Weeks 46–49Apprenticeship. Matched to an employer partner on the platform they run. Real code, real supervision, a written evaluation.
  4. Week 52Demo Day. Employer partners with open roles are in the room.
  5. AfterPlacement and follow-up. We work your search like any ACE Tech candidate, with check-ins at 30, 60, and 90 days.

Who this is for

Built for adults who want a real profession, not a certificate.

This is a fit if you

  • Are 18 or older and authorized to work in the United States
  • Want a career in enterprise software and can commit to a full year of part-time study
  • Are comfortable learning by doing — reading code, running it, fixing it
  • Are changing careers, coming from IT support or operations, or entering the workforce with no degree
  • Have a computer, a reliable internet connection, and about [N] hours a week

This is probably not a fit if you

  • Want to build mobile apps or games, or work in a consumer startup
  • Are looking for a self-paced course to dip into occasionally — this runs with a cohort, on a schedule
  • Need a job in the next 8 weeks — the first credential comes at Week 13 and placement typically follows the Developer credential at Week 26
  • Aren't interested in how businesses actually work — the business context is half the job
Questions

What people ask before they apply

I've never written code. Is that really okay?

Yes. The program assumes no programming experience. Weeks 1–3 are about how businesses run on software; you write your first program in Week 5 after a week on thinking like a programmer with no syntax at all. Roy's experience placing developers for 35 years is that prior coding is not what predicts success — business sense and careful habits are.

What exactly is MultiValue, and is it a dead technology?

MultiValue (also called Pick) is a family of database and application platforms — UniVerse, UniData, D3 — that stores business data in a way that fits how businesses actually work. It has run mission-critical systems for over 40 years and is actively developed by Rocket Software. The shortage isn't of systems; it's of developers who know them.

How is the program delivered?

Online, through the ACE Tech learning platform: weekly lessons, recorded and live demonstrations, labs on a live UniVerse training environment, a cohort community, and a weekly mentor session with a practicing MultiValue developer. The apprenticeship in Weeks 46–49 is with an employer partner and may be remote or on site depending on the host.

What does the scholarship cover, and what are the conditions?

The scholarship covers the full $16,000 tuition for all four credential levels. You pay a $54 technology fee at the start of each credential level — $216 over the program — and the fee is non-refundable. To keep the scholarship, you stay in good standing — keeping pace with your cohort and completing each milestone assessment. Learners who need to pause can re-enter with a later cohort.

Do you guarantee a job?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. What we do is put you in a specialist recruiter's candidate pool from Week 13 with a portfolio attached, connect you to employer partners who host apprentices and hire graduates, and work your search the way we work every ACE Tech candidate's. The market is on your side: these roles are hard to fill.

What are the credentials worth?

Each ACE Tech credential is earned by presenting a milestone project to a panel that includes an employer partner — not by finishing the reading. They're professional certifications backed by a recruiting firm that has placed MultiValue developers for 35 years, and each one maps to work a company will pay for.

What's the time commitment?

Part-time, about [N] hours a week for 52 weeks, with a fixed weekly rhythm: live session, lab, assignment, mentor session, assessment. The apprenticeship weeks are heavier — you're working inside a real company.
